Re: [GWL]: My Zone 5A Garden Still In Bloom!

Here in Toronto we have had a very warm November too: 

The perennials I put down at the beginning of the month are trying to
bud, which bodes no good.

Annuals that we expect to be long dead are still alive (cosmos and
catnip, for example). Early spring bloomers (primrose, vinca minor) are
seriously trying to bloom. 

I am not even considering snapdragons and violas that often survive
sharp frosts.

I was gathering confused ladybird beetles of every variety of spot in
mid-November, to stick on my indoor plants ...

The sparrows, having plenty of food, have bred again of course, so that
doomed juvenile sparrows were clustering on the porch roof in
mid-November.

It's not just that average days have been warm, but that there have been
no severely cold nights, of the sort that generally put a stop to these
problems.

Only now, at the end of the month, have we started to have the icy rains
that we need, so that plants and animals know what they should do.

With luck, December will be more normal. Cold but necessary.

Social disgrace note: Someone has been cutting the ornamental cabbage
heads at the public park up the street, I fear in order to eat them.
These plants are not bred for food. I hope no harm comes of it. We do
have a number of food banks in Toronto. Perhaps the person just does not
know?
