It seems to me that most really committed gardeners are into perennials, and that beginners and the less committed like annuals better. Gardeners plant more perennials; yardeners plant more annuals.
 
Perennials, grasses, trees and shrubs are the backbone of most committed gardener's gardens. When I use annuals, I plant those that work well with perennials as gap fillers -- particularly, the half hardy types that reseed. I also use annuals like marigolds and calendulas to add colour to the vegetable garden.
