I second the advice to try Bordines.  They have older established locations 
in Clarkston and Rochester, Michigan.  They just added two other locations 
which I haven't visited yet)...Grand Blanc and Brighton.  Their soil is worth 

the extra cost.  I have done my own trials with same size and type 
perennials side by side...Bordines did the best.  (No, I'm not on their 
payroll)!  They add hundreds if not thousands of new varieties every year.

Another one to try is Telly's.  They have locations in Brighton and Troy.  
Many of their perennials are smaller, but they are excellent for finding 
more obscure varieties.  Their pricing is better than Bordine's but they 
lack nice displays for ideas.

Both of these places have pretty knowledgeable staff out in the garden 
areas (not necessarily at the registers!)
