Jo Ellen, Here's an update on the pricing issue. I spoke today with the
editor of our local daily paper here in
Edwardsville, IL about writing a weekly garden column. I did my homework and
went in armed with documented research on how many Americans garden, how
much money they spend on garden-related pursuits and how that translates to
about $6.7 mil./year in our community alone. I even listed the businesses in
the area that sell garden products--there are about 39--all potential
advertisers. I took in a first column, Last Minute Christmas Gifts for
Gardeners. I went to the trouble of checking on where these gifts could be
purchased, mentioning local businesses whenever possible in the column. The
result--the editor didn't look at anything, but offered me $10/week for the
column. He said the pay was non-negotiable and most people wrote their
columns for free. I started to talk to him about the possible advertising
benefits a garden column could bring, but he said he was in news, not
advertising. I thanked him politely, said I couldn't afford to work for that
and left. I have a meeting with the local weekly newspaper editor tomorrow.
Anyone have any suggestions on my approach?

Thanks,
Linda Nitchman
