Re: [GWL]: newspapers
Hello Larry,
The Courier Journal over in Louisville, KY made some pretty deep cuts a
few years back. First to go was free lance garden writers. They have one
garden writer on staff who also holds the title of art critic. The big
Wednesday supplement feature section was almost eliminated. The home and
garden section essentially became the home section.
The agreement among bean counters seemed to be one garden article a week
was enough. I suppose we are lucky to have that one. The Indy Star gave up
on this end of its territory in southern Indiana, so we only have the
Courier Journal from the Kentucky side of the river who show less and less
interest in this area.
My experience to date freelancing for newspapers has been a bit "less
than..." Editors who know words, but nothing about gardening, but are in
charge of gardening articles. They want all rights up to and including your
soul, and do their best to pay nothing, or as close as they can get to for
free. I do not give my work away, so I wandered off to other greener
pastures. I am like a good grower of oranges... I will dump to keep the
price up for next year, rather than give them away today.
If you do not place a value on your work, who will?
