Re: [GWL]: The decline of garden writing

Several months ago, I wrote a column about St. Fiacre...a humorous piece (I
thought) that looked at the myths and legends. My editor, who has never
questioned anything I've submitted, wanted to know my sources. She had no
sense of humor about the guy, including my comments on Fiacre's misogynistic
ways. I had to actually defend running the piece against their fear of
offending someone...

Saints are like heavenly trade associations; there's one for about everything
and everyone.
Even gardeners.
Meet St. Fiacre, who does not get to be the patron saint of gardening because
he has 'acre' in his name. The Irish monk gets the moniker because of his
miracles, some of which are garden related.

I'm Catholic, so I certainly am knowledgeable about saints and their role in
religion.

selling the idea of slightly different fruits because "everyone wants apples
