Re: [GWL]: Your Opinion of Thompson and Morgan

I have known Tand M Seed Co. from way back in the days when I worked for
Burpee and later for Bodger. I've never had any germination problems, and
have sent in a test order every year, as I do with several seed Co's, and as
far as I can see their quality measures up to the other big names. You need
to remember there are no real standards for flower seed germination--some
states have state standards--Utah comes to mind, and I think Connecticut--as
there are for vegetables which are fairly well controlled by the Federal Gov
with its standards. By the same token, the naming of flower varieties, except
in those states which have laws, are whatever you want to name it. Thus we
see, in all catalogs, a flower variety with a name we never heard of, sounds
interesting, we try it, and find it's a variety we knew by another name, no
difference. This is not a mortal sin, but it does make those of who know
varieties a little unhappy.

In general, I would have to say that T and M service is usually at a par with
others, some years better, some years not, and the germination has always
been fine for the varieties I've ordered. Of course they have a lot of
varieties that never make it here in the arid Southwest.
