Suzi,
if there were a way to measure how much the American public really spends on 
baseball, football, basketball, tennis, golf, etc. in the form of higher 
prices for everything that's advertised heavily in support/sponshorship of 
those activities -- soft drinks, sports drinks, beer, cars, athletic shoes, 
etc. -- I think you'd see a startling jump in the $$ figures beside them.  By 
contrast, programs and magazines about gardening, and the advertising that 
accompanies them, tend to be for those items actually consumed by gardeners.
Ergo, somehow we have to turn gardening into a spectator sport.  Maybe when 
Nike starts making clogs & wellies, and Gatorade realizes there's a whole 
lotta sweatin' goin' on in the perennial border, we can rake in some 
sponsorship bucks, too.  Photographers, think product placement: An bucket of 
ice-cold Heinekens strategically placed on the table in that next patio shot, 
labels discreetly turned; a GMC pickup artfully blurred but still 
recognizable through the hedge...
On second thought, let's not.
