RE: [GWL]: Grackles

I have a starling story, if that counts.
Shortly after World War II starlings became a huge problem
in my neighborhood in Rochester, NY. Dense flocks of starlings
would nest in lawn and street trees in the evening. Their droppings
were killing plants, eating paint off cars, and causing great havoc.
A solution was found. Police with shotguns would come into the
neighborhood after th birds had settled down for the evening, and
blast away. My buddies and I would follow along, stuffing the corpses
in our city-issued burlap sacks. That lasted for about a week.
The starling survivors then left our
neighborhood, and I didn't hear of a problem again.

It was a memorable summer for an 11 year old.
