Re: how much to bill?

I have recently had this situation - for real.

The magazine commissioned 1000 words, with payment by the word. While I was working on the piece they decided to give the piece more space and wanted 1400 words so I sent in an extended piece. It never occured to me that they would do anything but pay the same 'word' rate for the longer piece. But it turned out that they wanted to pay the same total for 1400 words as they would have paid for 1000. Isn't that outrageous? After some awkward exchanges they decided to cut the feature back to 1000 words and pay me for 1000 words.

When the piece appears (and, Nan, surely they'll send you a copy of the printed work so you can count the words yourself) I'll be counting the words and if they stray too far over the 1000, they'll get an extra bill.

But the result, of course, is a soured relationship.

Hypothetical situation: An editor assigns 200 words, payment is by word. I write 300 words and the editor uses 250. Do I bill for 200 words or for 250? What if the editor says "write 200 or 300 words?" and I write 325? What if I don't know how many words are used in the end?
