wireless networks

I tried to go wireless last summer but we could not get any signal to reach outside the basement office where my internet hookup is. It turned out the wireless systems only go through certain lightweight materials (like sheetrock) & are blocked by others (like brick, cement or thick wood), so if for instance you are operating out of a cinderblock basement (like me) your signal likely will not travel to the upper floors of the house. Likewise if your house was constructed in the last ten or so years it may have aluminum 2x4's inside the walls which will interfere with the signals.

The manufacturers act clueless about these issues when asked, though will talk about it if pushed, so trial & error was the only way we had to learn that we just could not use a wireless network. Your mileage may vary, & probably will if your situation is more straightforward, like room-to-room on one floor in a house of not recent vintage. It IS a wonderful idea, though. Hopefully they'll improve the technology so that it works in more physical situations.
