JOY, FIRST LADY OF VEG WINS GUILD'S LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The doyenne of vegetable writing, Joy Larkcom has won the prestigious
Garden Writers' Guild Lifetime Achievement Award for 2003. The prolific
author and columnist who is credited with popularising Chinese vegetables
in the UK following the publication of her 1991 book, 'Oriental Vegetables', started
her career over 30 years ago as a 'Garden News' columnist and in 2001
pulled off a rare double by winning two Guild writing Awards: Journalist of
the Year and Practical Journalist of the Year. The result of the secret
ballot of Guild members was announced to a packed house of creative
professionals from the fields of horticultural publishing and broadcasting
at the Garden Writers' Guild Awards Lunch at The Savoy on November 27 by
master of ceremonies, Joe Swift.
Joy's Lifetime Achievement Award presentation was the finale of the Guild's
15 annual multimedia 'Oscars', among them Mirabel Osler (Journalist of the
Year), BBC Bristol's 'How To Be A Gardener 2' (TV Broadcast of the Year),
Stephen Anderton's 'History of Rock Gardens' for BBC Radio 4 (Radio
Broadcast of the Year), 'Gardens Illustrated' (Magazine of the Year), Derek
St Romaine (Photographer of the Year) and three outstanding books: 'Trees
for your Garden' by Allen Paterson (Reference Book of the Year), 'Organic

Apart from the Lifetime Achievement and Photographers' Choice Awards which
are decided by ballot, each category is judged by a panel of independent
experts. "The judges were highly impressed by the overall creative and
technical standards of this year's nominations," said Geoff Hodge, chairman
of the Garden Writers' Guild. "Criticisms were few and far between," he
went on, "although the judges did feel that there was scope for technical
improvement in one or two TV gardening programmes. They also hoped that the
cult of the celebrity gardener has reached its peak in the
magazine world." Full details of the 2003 Awards, including photographs of
the ceremony, can be found online at www.gardenwriters.co.uk.
