Not that I would automatically agree with Mr Friel on everything he says but in this case he is absolutely correct. :-)

I keep very few books on the bookshelf beside my desk within arm's reach ( mostly dictionaries/thesaraus/reference books on English etc) and the *only* plant book is the RHS Dictionary of Gardening. If I were telling garden writers to purchase only one book (actually a set of 4) this would be the one.

Having said that, I still have 64 boxes of gardening books to unpack from my recent move but the RHS went in the "important" book boxes to be unpacked immediately.

I note you can get copies through used book dealers www.abe.com and amazon.com Do make sure you are buying the newer 1992 edition and not the 1951 edition. And yes, its expensive but it is worth the price. Mine has made me back its purchase price many times over since 1992.
