Re: New Seed Saving Group Formed

Hi Brook,

This sounds like an exciting new initiative. I went to the "Restoring Our Seed" Conference in Vermont in November. It drew quite a crowd, much larger than expected. Folks are fast becoming aware of the importance of preserving and rebuilding our seed heritage and hungry for more information on seed saving as well as open pollinated, heirloom and traditional varieties. A number of seed exchange groups were set up on the spot. It was especially wonderful to see a lot of young farmers and gardeners anxious to learn about plant breeding and seed saving. With the growing consolidation in the seed industry and staggering loss of diversity in OP cultivars, this is destined to become a hot topic among gardeners and market growers in the future. News about good sources of OP germ plasm is more important than ever.

If you'd like to send some more information I'd be happy to include your project in an upcoming article I'm working on for the Seeds of Change eNewsletter in which I plan to highlight various regional seed saving initiatives.

Keep up the great work.

Those of you who cover the southern states might be interested in this for yourselves and your readers.

Kentucky Seed Savers; a regional group dedicated to saving and preserving the heirlooms and sustainable agricultural practices of Kentucky and neighboring states---particularly WV, VA, NC, TN, and MO---has just been launced after more than a year of planning.

KSS will be a non-profit organization, similar to SSE, but with a higher level of member service. For instance, there will be a monthly newsletter; twice-annual get togethers; and Appalachian-area heirloom seeds provided as part of membership.

Don't let the name fool you. Our mandate is to collect, document, and preserve the heirloom crop plants and agricultural practices of middle-Appalachia. There is no other group we know of focusing on this region.

The official start up date is January 1, 2004, and we have a range of membership categories, from individual through corporate sponsor. Those who sign up as Founding Members will automatically be placed on the Advisory Board, and help determine KSS directions and policies.

I've been named Managing Director, and will be in charge of operations, editing the newsletter, and so forth. Press inquiries should be directed to me as well.

Anyone interested in KSS should contact me for membership information: Brook Elliott, Box 519, Richmond, KY 40476, KentuckySeeds@hotmail.com.

I appreciate any help GWLers can provide helping to spread the word about this important new organization.

Brook
