RE: Speaking of trade shows
To add to Doug Green's comments on trade shows. Another reason for the
garden writer to go to these shows is to get samples of new plants to grow
in your own garden for a year or two before they come out into the market.
The same goes for soft goods and hard goods. Companies love to have a
garden writer be able to say, "I am growing this plant, and love it", rather
than to say "I'm told this is easy to grow". Another value in going to
trade shows is to schmooze up the bigger growers and manufacturers to get
their take on consumer trends. They are always listening for facts and
gossip about what is happening with the consumers. This is not hard data
necessarily, but it is good indicator stuff to help a garden writer keep his
or her stories alert to the latest interests of the readers.
I love trade shows. It's the same feeling I had as a kid when I walked into
a stationary store or a hardware store; so many new things to see and dream
about.
Happy Holidays
