Dargan book marketing advice sought

Dear Garden Writers,

I have my first REAL book coming out Feb 2007: Timeless Landscape
Design. I enjoy the forum's comments made regarding marketing. I've
booked many lectures this spring and pose a question for advice:

1. Have you had success with a booth at a flower show where you are
speaking?

The Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta has me featured as a speaker. I
just learned of their policy that restricts lecturer booksales to occur
at their large bookstore on the floor at a booksigning event after the
lecture. I cannot sell my own copies to make some $$ (and am not being
paid to lecture). The show lasts 5 days. I lecture the first day.

The SFS occurs the first week the book comes out. 60,000 people come to
the show. I'm pretty well known in the SE. I think I could make many
contacts to further promote the book by having a longer, more formalized
stay at the event...but would spend $1500 to do so ! I'd need to sell
alot of books to break even.

2. At another event in Savannah, a similar thing is available. I can
handily make a good-looking booth....but is it worth the effort? I also
have a day job as a busy landscape architect, but really want to give
the book its best shot this spring.

By the way, we are using Paypal at our website and having pretty good
pre-sales. I also launched a "Give a Bookplate for the Holidays
Campaign" and sent out lots of mailings to our office data base and
friends... had a corporate order for 40 bookplates yesterday!

This is an exhaustive and expensive birth process. Thanks in advance for
your words of advice.
