Critter conflicts
There are two groups that call themselves PETA. The other one stands for People for Eating Tasty Animals.
It is absolutely true that animals were here first (except, or course, for Norway rats, sparrows, starlings, horses, red foxes and whatever other species Europeans brought to America) and that they deserve respect. We can design and build more intelligently. But in my mind, Homo sapiens is the critter that gets first dibs, and there are too many of certain other animals in certain parts of this country. Deer especially like to live close to humans -- too close for comfort. They like to eat the things we plant, be it corn or Corydalis. They've learned that they rarely get shot when they're around us, e.g., within the city limits of Philadelphia. I live in the boonies, and I see deer a few times a year. A friend who lives near Fairmount Park sees them daily.

Great essay, Tom.
Martha in rural Muskogee OK where the bunnies, raccoons, etc. drive us to
distraction and multiply like, well, rabbits.
