There was a security hole in the GMail service that allowed people to receive
copies of your email. To see if you were impacted you should check your
filters to see if you have any unrecognized additions.
I think the moral of the story is:
"You get what you pay for."
If you have any critical emails, domain registrations, etc. don't use a free
email service. Commercial services may have security flaws in them
too, but they're more likely to be discovered because they're usually not
a blackbox solution that administrators can't prod with a sharp stick.
GMail is a proprietary third-party solution that only Google developers
and hackers are going to be playing with.
I have never used a free Internet service for anything important for exactly
this reason. And it's also one of the reasons that we're instituting a
policy at work to prohibit email forwarding to outside ISPs -- we have no
control over what happens then.
