Setting fees, Garden Rant and freebies
I've heard C.L speak and she is indeed an excellent speaker. So,
congratulations that you found a way to use your talents and do such a great
job.
I've read every piece of this conversation while only half breathing since I
made a good living speaking and teaching in another industry and it was hard
work. But I would not do it again because it used me up and now I garden
write as a retirement activity for which I am paid.
The only time I did free presentations was for non-profits where I was
selling my book or if a friend worked for one. I also did not negotiate my
fee. When business was down I raised my fees and it always worked to bring
in a new level of client.
Garden Rant has run a two part interview with a travel writer who talked
about the other compromises in writing for an industry: Writing only the
good stuff, and in particular, when a sponsor provided his hotel, meal, etc.
I wonder if you feel/respond/think the same when you receive plants, seeds,
discounts, etc. from growers. Freebies are a benefit both to the provider
and to those of us who write and communicate about those products.
Can you diss a freebie? Or, do you just say nothing at all about it in your
writings?
