Re: No handouts at GWA talks?

I'm just now catching up on GWL e-mails and saw the one from JEMS about speakers for the GWA symposium. I noticed in the online notice, it says that handouts will be online only, because of sustainability. I'm all for sustainability, but so often a handout in my hand can make all the difference between getting a lot out of a talk and getting very little. Also, I've noticed that people tend to stop the speaker in hort-related talks to ask the identity of a particular plant -- because they didn't get it the first time and want to write it down -- when there's no handout, which slows everything down.

Other than taking my laptop to all talks -- which I'd rather not, how does the board/sustainability committee suggest that attendees get around the drawbacks of this new policy? I'm sure it must have been discussed thoroughly. (And will the handouts be online before the talks so they can be accessed when the speaker is talking?)

Many thanks and a happy New Year's to all,

Judy Lowe
