tulip poplars
GWL: We have two aged tulip poplars (really magnolias) on our property
and
they do not shed in August, the leaves do not turn brown, they live to
be
300 to 400 years and are a valued timber tree. Perhaps yours are an
inferior
cultivar? Peter
Peter: Liriodendron tulipifera is indeed in the Magnoliaceae, it is
indeed a valued timber tree with an unusual hue to the wood, and it
can be long-lived, but that doesn't change any of the facts stated
here. The trees on my property (I did not plant them) and my clients'
properties (I did not plant those, either) and our forest trees are
the native species. As a general purpose landscape tree, it is
riddled with problems and to be avoided.
