Re: Editorial Issue

Lorraine, when this happened to me once (parties to remain nameless!), I sent a polite inquiry. That is, I *asked* instead of accusing/coming on miffed...although as we all know, 'miffed' is not always easy to detect in an email. I received a hasty apology. It was "an oversight...I was in a hurry, didn't want to miss the opportunity," and "yes, of course, you are entitled to additional compensation." And lo, in due course, I got a bit more money.

Worth a try. May your ending be happy as well.

Merry holidays to all,

Subject: [GWL] Editorial Issue

Hello, wise and experienced writers!

I really need some help with a very sticky situation. The editor I write for (a
relationship of nearly 10 years) has several publications under his control. My
regular monthly column goes into just one of them that covers about 15,000 homes
in Northwest CT. My most recent paid column on "Gifts for the Gardener" went in
as requested and expected. However, I just found out today that he also used the
column with photos (Noel, the Cobra Head photo made it!) for another publication
which reaches an even larger geography. Of course, I'm pleased that my work is
getter wider viewing, however, I'm not so excited that this wasn't discussed
with me, especially as it relates to compensation.

Obviously, I don't want to poison the well since I'd like to keep this writing
gig. On the other hand, I also don't want my editor to think that he can get my
work for free so to speak. I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone may have,
especially if this is something that's to be expected or if you've had similar
experiences. Is this something I should mention in gratitude or ignore or
tactfully probe for additional comp or ????

Thanks, as always.
