Hi Everyone,
The GWA Sustainability Committee has a permaculture subcommittee. Permaculture is also very much embedded in the student community at many colleges. PINA, the Permaculture Institute of North America, has a permaculture design certification program, which one of our co-chairs has completed. She also sits on the board of the Great Lakes "hub". Permaculture is not going away -- it's growing.
As for the "messiness," this is usually the result of well-intentioned people who lack sufficient knowledge. But some of it also has to do with our concept of what constitutes beauty in a garden -- inherited from different times and places than the natural environments of North America. Permaculture is very much about the genius of place.
While a previous comment was correct about the three guidelines for permaculture, there are actually 12 design principals, which are applicable to any garden.
The GWA Sustainability Committee and it's Permaculture Subcommittee are working committees (meaning you have to attend meetings and participate). If you're interested in serving on the subcommittee, contact Debra Knapke at dknapke@columbus.rr.com
Cordially,
Lois

Lawrence, the new permaculture book you sent info about sounds practical and good. It took me many decades to learn a few permaculture principles that would work for me in conditions such as less than the ideal amount of sun. Maybe we need a new word to replace "permaculture" which sounds kind of thesis-ish if you know what I mean. Ideas?
