Sharon,
Get yourself a copy of Hummingbird Gardens: Attracting Jewels to Your
Backyard, by Nancy L Newfield and Barbara Nielsen. New York: Houghton
Mifflin, 1996. ISBN 1-881527-88-3 (That's the hardcover; it is also out in
paperback).
It is comprehensive and extremely well written. It covers the subject
region by region, includes sample garden plans, and includes a master guide
to the hummingbirds resident in the U.S. and occasional visitors to this
country and where to find them.
There are several other lesser works on the subject (books on hummingbirds
and hummingbird gardens are hot in recent years) but their information is
much less authoritative and inclusive.
