Re: biotech unravelled
Bill: It seems to me as non-scientist, that the science and the arguments
around biotech are now so complex, it is almost impossible for a lay person
to have an informed understanding, especially when it comes down to what are
scientific controversies.
You make an important point when you write: "Particularly now that it has
reached an industrial scale, biotechnology must be watched and regulated
carefully. I am confident that that is being done, but not so confident
that it will continue to be so under the impact of big money provided to
congress and the administration by agribusiness concerns."
Unfortunately, there are many of us who are not in the least confident that
this technology was watched and regulated enough before it was unleashed
into the agricultural, and thus the natural, world. The Europeans are
screaming bloody murder about biotech, and we North Americans are like
sheep, letting the scientists pat us on the head, and say the equivalent of,
"Don't worry dear, we know what we're doing."
I'm not so sure. I used to be quite sanguine about biotech, but the more I
read, the more sceptical I become. At least, there should be choice on the
consumer level: labelled products, so those folks who don't want to injest
genetically altered pototoes, soy and corn products can do so. --Yvonne
