It seems to me as non-scientist, that the science and the arguments
around biotech are now so complex, it is almost impossible for a lay person
to have an informed understanding, especially when it comes down to what are
scientific controversies.
As writers our job is to simplify and explain complex issues in terms our readers can understand. That's part of what we do for a living.
On this particular issue, however, before we even get into the science it's important to explain just what's going on. Unfortunately, as with so many sociel issues today, only one side is being heard. And that side tends to lie and mislead.
At least, there should be choice on the
consumer level: labelled products, so those folks who don't want to injest
genetically altered pototoes, soy and corn products can do so.
The scary thing, Yvonne, is the hocus-pocus surrounding this labeling issue. If you ask most people who are screaming about labeling whether or not it would determine whether they eat that food, most respond "no." That is, they want to know if something has been genetically alterered, but it won't determine if they eat it or not.
Hmmmmm? Can "labeling" be an obfuscatory tactic being used by big agriculture to hide the real issues?
