Re: I.D.
Dear Linda Schaffner:
I hope that whoever takes over your position at the magazine has the same
sense of ethics as you seem to.
I'll bet that when you move back home you'll be able to find distance
learning courses from one or more universities. Good Grief! you'll be within
a day's drive of UGA at Athens. You can support and learn from the North
Carolina State University Landscape Arboretum. You might get to visit Tony
Avent's nursery. And The weather ......well hurricanes happen, unexpected
frosts zap the camellias, you'll get used to reasonable rainfall and then
MOTHER NATURE will turn off the faucet and it will seem like Nevada all over
again.
Horticulture is a fabric of basic science that we learn more about every day,
and local conditions of soil and climate, quantity of energy as solar
radiation, day length. All of those things can hold your attention and I
hope your friends and relatives's as well.
Connect with some of the specialized societies. The American Camellia
society has headquarters some where east of Arkansas, south of Virginia.
Seeing their property will change your attitude about what is a shade tree.
There are trees in the southeastern states that grow here in
Massachusetts,BUT they grow VERY much bigger in the different climate.
I'm sure you enjoyed learning about plant life in Nevada, and I'm sure you'll
enjoy doing the same now. Maybe you can cajole a very local newspaper to let
you do a diary format about your present learning adventures, certainly
sharing info about horticultural activity is worth doing. The people who
live within a thousand miles of you can help you find connections. That is
one nice thing about the "net".
I hope you can get Internet service going quickly after your move.
