watergardening

Another lurker here;
Finally had to chime in after lurking all this time. Yes there are people
doing a better job of marketing water gardening products out there . . .
but- the real reason for the explosion in this segment of the water
gardening industry is this-these products work. A properly installed
mechanical filter, biological filter, bacteria colonies, fish, plants, and a
healthy pond bed create healthy environments. Environments that are easy to
maintain and enjoy. I have considerable experience with this, having built
water features in 9 different states and 4 different climatic zones. My pond
owners average less than 10 minutes per week on their ponds, unless they
feel like putzing around. With the know how, equipment and installation
skills available it is no wonder growth is high and will continue.

Water is the separator of good gardens and great gardens. Movement, motion,
observation, energy(static and dynamic), life, sound, sight, how could you
not want water in your garden.

Statistically speaking; some manufacturers may give you figures. Check with
the GCA through ANLA, they may be able to help with numbers that garden
centers devote to water gardening. The two biggest distributors of pond
equipment that is professionally installed are; Aquascapes near Chicago
(Batavia?), and Pond Supplies of America in Pittsburgh, or Los Angeles. They
are head and shoulders above the rest in supplying quality skimmers, up-flow
filters, and pumps that range 2500gph and up.

MY best advice is this. Start with the notion that the number one complaint
is, my pond is too small. Second is about the water quality. Americans are
much more concerned about clarity than the water gardeners on the other side
of the “pond”. This is now becoming a none issue if it is built right . .
.the first time.

There is very little good info out there, Most articles I see are written by
folks who have no real practical experience, you need to build and maintain
ponds to understand the dynamics, it is very challenging. Most articles
still show ponds in the middle of the back yard, a stack of stones for the
waterfall, and a ugly necklace bead of stones around the perimeter. Plus,
they are still showing the pump in the pond water. Geeesh! We’ve got to do
better.
