Story idea No Green Thumb Required -- New Simply Beautiful

NO GREEN THUMB REQUIRED
TO HAVE A SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

Chicago, IL - February 20, 2002 -- The good news coming out of garden
centers and nurseries today is that you don't have to have a green thumb
to be a successful gardener.

Many garden centers are now stocking brand name plants bred by growers
for those people who don't yet know a petunia from a persimmon, or an
annual from a perennial.

"We call this gardener the 'dabbler' -- women who are very short on time
and lack the plant knowledge to know what flowers will grow and thrive
in her yard,"," says Ball Horticultural's marketing manager Jeff Gibson.

"But she is certain about one thing," he adds. "She wants her home,
inside and out, to look beautiful and she wants season long, no fuss
color in her yard."

However, dabblers - who make up probably 85% of the market - tend to be
overwhelmed whenever they walk into a garden center or nursery. Rows and
rows of plants, flowers, shrubs, soils and potting equipment seem to
fill the garden center like an ocean of sights and smells, and more
importantly, seem to have no real source of information they understand.

"Most shoppers feel lost and don't know where to begin when they enter a
garden center," says Gibson. "We wanted to simplify the selection
process and make it easier for her to have a beautiful garden that
thrives all season."

Ball, the leading breeder of annuals in the world and introducer of the
most popular WaveT petunias, did its homework to find out how they could
help the gardener feel more confident and be more successful.

The average gardener told them just what they want -- beautiful and
reliable plants that perform with out a lot of fuss, and simple to
understand information for the plants they purchase for their gardens.

Based on this information, Ball created the Simply BeautifulT line of
hundreds of garden-tested Simply Beautiful flower varieties, all in one
collection. Offering a rainbow of dazzling colors that last all season
long, Simply Beautiful flowers are garden tested and trial proven so any
gardener can be successful in growing stunning flowers that thrive all
season.

Gibson says Ball has added both new and colorful varieties to the Simply
Beautiful line, including interesting new varieties like Tidal WaveT
Hedge Petunias, FanfareT Trailing Impatiens, a gardening first, and
SunnyT Thunberg Black-Eyed Susan Vine. Lots of old favorites are in the
collection, like FiestaT Double Impatiens, DazzlerR Landscape Impatiens
& Designer Landscape Geraniums.

The new Simply Beautiful brand also addresses the dabbler's concerns
through its unique Garden Know How(tm) System. Designed to simplify the
plant selection process, each plant is clearly tagged with information
on plant needs -- sun or shade, height and spread, how to use it -- and
color.

"It was very important to consumers to be able to see what the plant
looks like when full grown," says Gibson. "So our plants have big,
bright pictures of what the flower looks like in full bloom."

Now when the dabbler walks into a hot pink, yellow and purple sea of
plants at a garden center, they at least have a guide to help them find
their way to tell the forest from the trees - or at least the petunias
from the persimmons.
