RE: Gardening in drought conditions

Suzi:

What follows my notes is a list of plants that are
dry-soil/drought tolerant (but might be in want of a
good beer).

1) FYI: Although I'm now in California, I've lived in
Wisconsin, Illinois, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania
and I've left behind some nice drought-tolerant,
dry-soil gardens (especially on the Sand Pine Barrens
of northern Wisconsin).

2) Here in California, the situation is different (in
many ways but let's address this one). Here we've
adjusted to conditions that you would call permanent
drought. What we plant (mostly) is for dry conditions
that we can count on year after year. We also have
soils unlike most of yours; ours are not deep,
organically-rich, nor moist.

You have a dilemma. If a gardener were to plant true
drought-tolerant and dry soil plants for one season of
drought there, the plantings may be in trouble in your
average years of rainfall.

I have, to help alleviate this dilemma, kept that in
mind when preparing the list. The plants on the list,
although naturally drought and dry soil tolerant, are
quite adaptable and will do fine during average to wet
years or in wet (not boggy) soils or in heavy soils.

It could be, after all is said and done, that what you
might want to recommend is for the home gardener to
avoid planting any permanent, long-term plants and to
stick with annuals, some bulbs, and quick perennials
to slide them through this temporary condition.

3) Almost all of the plants on the list will do well
anywhere in the "East". A few would be happiest south
of USDA Zone 6-ish and a fewer still would be happiest
north.
