The well-researched publication

Larry,

Thanks for your comments on researching articles:

It may seem "common sense" that goldfish might escape and eat
vegetation, eggs or fry (baby fish), but carry that common sense
downstream a little farther and make an informed recommendation, not one
based on what one thinks may be true. Don't sound the alarm unless
there's really a fire. Talk to a game warden or freshwater biologist
with your parks and wildlife department for some real insights, and let
us know. We're all willing to learn and spread the truth.

You said it very much better than I did and we would do well to heed
your advice. Think about it. If readers don't trust the writing in
publications, why would they continue to buy them and read them? On a
personal level, it's in my nature (a compulsive reader and that
librarian thing again) to appreciate a well-researched document, but
it's also in my best professional interest, and I hope yours-- readers
must be able to relate to and to respect articles in order to want to be
able to keep track of them either to read again or for research.

So I urge garden writers (me, too) to keep the long term in mind as well
as the short term sale and to give America the best writing we're
capable of. And thanks to Carol Deppe for the most lucid and salient
description of the "essence" of personalized writing I've seen in a long
time.
