GWL] freebies

Thank you Saxon for your gracious and tactful gentle crticism. When I read
the requesting email I was a bit steamed, but discretion being the better
part of something-or-other I kept my thoughts to myself.

One test I use when asked for freebies by a profit making venture or even a
non-profit venture that is clearly operationg in a business setting, is who
else is giving away something valuable. With all due respect, I would ask if
the person making the request (writer, editor or publisher) is donating
their services, how about the printer, the binder, the distributor, etc. If
the editor or publisher is doing it gratis, then it's fair for them to ask
me to contribute gratis. Doesn't mean I'll do it, but it is fair to ask
under thoase circumstances. If they are being paid, or making money on it,
then it's only right that they pay the contributors, ALL contributors, and
it is simply unfair and an abuse (IMHO) for them even to ask. It is
disrespectful.

When I am offered a credit, I respond by telling them I'll be thrilled to
contribute for credit if they will call my mortgage lender (or electric
company, or grocer, etc) and convince them to reduce my payment this month
for the credit being offered by the publisher. That is a good measure of the
value of a credit line.
