RE: Looking for Sources on Native/Wild Roses

Title: Re: [GWL] Looking for Sources on Native/Wild Roses

To my knowledge there is only a handful of roses—maybe a dozen, that are species native to this continent. Anything that has escaped cultivation and has provenance that go back to Marie Antoinette does not qualify. I would start with a very careful perusal of Hortus Third and take it from there. Once you have a list of species names you can look for growers in various parts of the country.

As for ‘wild roses’ the list there is long and composed of escapees and hybrids; to determine who or what they are would be a thorny task.

This sounds like a very interesting article.

A personal favorite is http://www.heirloomroses.com  They have a huge selection.  They also have a collection of species, though I don't know if they offer the species in their catalog or not.

I'm doing an article for Native Plants Magazine on Native/Wild Roses.  I'm looking for sources all over the United States in terms of experts and individuals who are growing native roses.  Besides specifics on native roses, I'm searching for someone who is growing a rose or roses that have been passed down through the family.
