Re: Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 13, Issue 6

Jeff,
How nice to finally open my email tonight and see your short and pleasant note. It was for all of us, an incredible experience, to speak with so many thousands of gardeners about PAR, straw bale culture, Mataneuska vegetables, wattle fences and on....As Jeff and several others know so well, preparation began several days before the show opened. My special thanks to those who helped prepare and construct it, this includes, Jeff Lowenfels, Mark Turner, Susan Cruver, Debra Prinzing, Tonya Lehrner, Ed Hume and his drivers, Mike Hessel, my husband Keane McGee and son, David, Phil Wood, the student volunteers from Lake Washington Technical College, Pat Munts, Mary-Kate Mackey, the amazing propagation committee of the Pierce County Master Gardeners, Peg Tilley, a new member from Bellingham and Mike who laid our sod. Without all their help in the trenches, slinging mulch, moving pots, planting in straight lines and doing mundane work with such energy, good humor and intelligence we would not have achieved what we did. Yesterday at teardown, Debby Leung joined Susan Cruver, and our family and crew from Nichols Nursery. Of course during the five long days of the show, Jeff Lowenfels was indefatigable, never losing voice or enthusiasm as he cheerfully explained PAR. It seems all the GWA members and many Master Gardeners signed up to help staff our garden, talk and pass out brochures. It was not uncommon to see five or so GWA members dotting the front of the garden and a crowd lined up six or seven deep.
The Northwest Flower Show is a class act with a stipend for designers which made it possible for us to even consider this project. The show always has a wonderful mix of modest gardens, artistry and extravaganzas so the 27 gardens transport us into a magical world of gardening even when it's cold outside.
I'm still going around slightly dazed that our humble vegetable garden so thoroughly pleased both judges and attendees. It seems the merits of food gardening and sharing with those in need caught the imagination of many of the 75,000 people who visited this years show. it's been a privilege to work on such a unifying project with so many wonderful people...a little gushy I know but they were wonderful and we pulled off more than anyone could have expected.
As a wonderful conclusion, the raffle of a "Sunshine Greenhouse", part of our display, earned many thousands of dollars to help the Lynnwood, Washington food bank expansion. The purpose of the expansion is to have adequate refrigerated storage for fresh produce. Sunshine Greenhouses was but one of the many businesses who shared products and contributed to our efforts, including Sunset Publishing, Raintree Nursery, One Green World, Ed Hume Seeds, Renee's Garden and the Anchorage Daily News.
