Fwd: SPECIAL INVITATION TO DEL MAR CALIF.

Title: Fwd: SPECIAL INVITATION TO DEL MAR CALIF.

Garden Writers Invited To Del Mar, CA.
March 6-7, 2004

Through the efforts of three San Diego GWA members (Lucy Warren, Nan Sterman and Mary Hellman James) the San Diego Spring Home/Garden Show and Quail Botanical Gardens invite GWA members to Del Mar, Ca., for a garden show, educational seminars, networking and nursery hopping on March 6 and 7. The event coincides with the area's most impressive garden show and the introduction of new spring varieties by EuroAmerica Propagators and The Flower Fields.

The program begins at the Spring Home/Garden Show and members who attend will be given free admission. Held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and sponsored by the San Diego Horticultural Society (SDHS), the garden show consists of 21 display gardens by some of the area's top horticulturists and landscape designers; plant sales by some of San Diego's top specialty nurseries and growers; and free lectures on a variety of garden topics. A complete lineup can be found on the show's web site

On Saturday at 4 p.m., participants will be treated to a tour of the display gardens by an SDHS member. Then there will be a networking session (along with cocktails and nibbles). At 6 p.m., the program will get underway. Four speakers are planned:

  • GWA member and Flower Fields spokesperson Donna Greenbush will highlight spring introductions

  • Pat Hammer, author of S the New Topiary? and creator of last year's dazzling topiaries at the Philadelphia Flower Show, will discuss new directions in topiary.

  • Dee Maharanao of the award-winning San Diego Water Conservation Garden will debut their new video on the garden.

  • GWA-member Lucy Warren will take us on a brief romp through the history of California's plant palette.

The Sunday portion of the program is hosted by Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas. A continental breakfast will be sponsored by EuroAmerican Propagators. It will be followed by a look at some of the new Proven Winners varieties for spring and a preview of new bulbs by Jim Threadgill of California Flower Bulb Company.

Next, Quail Executive Director Julian Duval and Director of Horticulture David Ehrlinger will lead tours of the garden that will include visits to Quail's outstanding bamboo collection and new Children's Garden. Afterwards, participants will be free to linger at Quail and/or go nursery hopping in nearby North County, which is home to some of the region's top specialty nurseries. A map will be provided and discounts will be offered at each to GWA members.

Where to Stay
Two area hotels are offering special rates for GWA members. The San Diego Hilton-Del Mar is holding a block of rooms for $129 a night (single and double) until Feb. 20.
