computer problems

Hi All
For what it's worth:
Some time ago I had requested help from you fellow garden writers with
"computer boffin" qualifications. (Thank you Lon for not taking it off the
list at the time.) The replies were immediate and helpful and certainly
solved the problem in the short term.
The real cause came to light when our Norton subscription ran out and we
tried to update it on line. The problems encountered led to us bringing in a
real live expert and sitting him down in front of our screen.
We were unpleasantly surprised when he showed us our ms-config and the
start-up screen. Lots and lots of adserve types had insinuated themselves so
that everytime we tuned in they turned on. (Some of them had the capability
of changing our home-page and opposing programmes would get into a contest
as to which web-page would show up.)They are gone and our web research is
done on our own terms again.
We've augmented our system with a PestPatrol product that seems to keep us
clean.
