If you think those maps are bad, take a look at the new map proposed by the AHS:
 
 
It ignores many years of records to focus on 1986-2002, *and *dumps the "a" and "b" designations.
I'm technically in zone 7a by the old map, microclimatically in 6b, and the new map puts me in 8. Ridiculous!

The maps don't work very well.  The Nat Arb map doesn't expand enough to differentiate complex areas.  Using my zip code (98146), the Nat Gard Assn site puts me in zone 7b, but the actual map has me in 8b.
 
These tools need to be more refined and more accurate.
