Chitting potatoes

I have always practiced chitting with my potatoes, i.e., putting them in a
warm, bright spot for a month or so before planting. Warmth causes them to
sprout, but the light keeps the sprouts from growing, and once in the ground
 they take right off.

I'm doing a column at the moment on potatoes, and in a rare lucid moment,
decided to check my methods. In the dozen or so books on vegetable gardening
I have, there was absolutely no mention of chitting. When I googled it
(chitting and potatoes), almost all of the hits were British sites.

Question -- is this practice completely unknown in America?
