Re: Garden writer's garden in BH&G

Betty Mackey asked: <<How did the BH&G people handle the photo shoot? Did you learn anything new that is useful to photographers or writers? How far ahead of publication was it?>>

BH&G's field editor Andrea Caughey scouted my garden early last spring and set up the photo shoot for a month or so later, after getting the go-ahead from garden editor Doug Hall. BH&G doesn't let people write about their own gardens, so even though I write for Meredith on a regular basis, I wasn't assigned the story. It was a bit of a switch, being the person interviewed. The photographer was Dominique Vorillon, who is based in L.A. and who also shoots for Elle Decor and other big slicks. He and his assistant, and Andrea -- who choreographed the shoot -- showed up before dawn, and then ended up sitting around waiting for the fog to clear. (They were grateful for coffee, cheese and crackers.) I can't think of anything else that might be of interest, except that Dominique has a French accent and likes to work barefoot.
