Re: mushroom compost
Just east of where I live is Chester County, PA, the mushroom capital of... well, at least of America, if not the world. Ergo, Mushroom soil is an inexpensive and popular garden enhancer here. It doesn't do much for fertility, but it does add organic matter and lightens & aerates our heavy clay soil.
And I think it would have to be considered compost. It's made by composting manure, straw, corn cobs and God knows what else. The companies that make it for the mushroom houses produce it in enormous windrows. They use tall, specially-built tractors rigged with paddles to straddle the windrows and turn the stuff. In the dead of winter, steam pours out of these piles. You don't need to read a sign to know you've arrived in Chester County.
