One cautious word of advice -- you get what you pay for. I used a Nikon
D70 for about a year, but my regular use broke the camera. My 80-200mm
lens put too much stress on the plastic casing, causing the frame to bend
and pull the aperture arm way out of whack.
Although it cost me more, I went to a D200 and am *much* happier. Most
importantly, the camera has a magnesium frame that holds up against abuse,
and it has so many extra features that I had been missing in my D70 (little,
things, like shutter release cord capabilities).
One other thing to consider is your future upgrade path. If you think
that you might be a D200 down the road, then you might want to get a
D70 because the memory cards are compatible. The D80 uses a different
memory stick format, so you'd have to invest in totally new ones if
you upgrade.
