Paxistima canbyi

Rats! I've been searching for a while, but can't come up with any 
explanation of where the plant Paxistima canbyi gets the common name 
rat stripper. This low-growing shrub also has a common name of cliff 
green. It's native in the eastern U.S., does best in alkaline, 
well-drained soil.

Any ideas on the name rat stripper? Merci.
