Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 85, Issue 24

They aren't how-to or reference books, but don't overlook Beverley 
Nichols books, especially the Merry Hall trilogy:  Merry Hall (1951), 
Laughter on the Stairs (1953), and Sunlight on the Lawn (1956).  The 
writing is exquisitely crafted and the humor is pure delight.  And you 
do get some good garden and plant information as he describes the making 
of his garden at his country home in England.
