Re: Philadelphia Flower Show
I'm going to be at the Philadelphia Flower Show babysitting the rock garden
society exhibit of tufa and alpine plants on Tuesday, March 6, from 10 am to
2 pm, on the show floor near the bonsai and the orchid society exhibits. I'm
on the committe and have been one of many people helping with its creation.
Betsy Knapp, the trough maker, is the designer.
Duane Campbell will give a lecture in the Demo Hall "C" on Wednesday, March
7, at 11 am. It's about growing terrific tropical plants indoors. If you
will be there, stop in. His book, "Best of Green Space: 30 Years of
Composted Columns," will be available at the show bookstore.
I hope to see list members at the show! Denise, I will look for you Tuesday.
Here are a couple of practical notes on travel and dining:
* If you are coming to town on the Metroliner or Acela, you exit at 30th
Street Station in Philadelphia. From there you can take a taxi or take
regional rail (SEPTA) directly to the Market East Station and do as Denise
says below.
* If you want to leave the show and return the same day, get your hand
stamped at a booth just outside the main hall.
* At the Reading Terminal Market near the Convention Center, not only will
you find Philly cheesesteaks, but crafts and artisanal foods, lots of
groceries, countless foods of all ethnicities ready to eat, and good coffee
and ice cream.
* If you are a fan of Asian food, as I am, head a few blocks northeast and
you will find many authentic choices. My current fave for lunchtime dim sum
is Ocean Harbor Restaurant at 1023 Race Street. Be brave! Alas, the dim sum
is gone by dinner time. I ate lunch there yesterday. Don't miss the
calimari.
And, for the truly frugal, if you take the New York Chinatown bus to
Philadelphia it costs $12 and lets you out two blocks from the Convention
Center where the show takes place. Sometimes the buses are new, sometimes
not...and they are usually jammed.
Happy travels-- be lucky! -- Betty
