Re: Impatiens Downy Mildew

Regarding 'deep shade' and inspiration. We have (had until H. Sandy) a
forested plot, lots of shade. My skin sizzles in the sun, so all of my
gardening (mental and physical) is done in the shade. The heavy shade
areas are filled primarily with spring-bloomers but, unless we have a
drought, the flowers last well into the summer. The difference is fewer,
more spare blooms, but that look is more appropriate for blending in with
our natural surroundings.

My list of plants is long, but among the easiest are bleeding heart,
dogwood, tiarella, trillium, pinky winky hydrangea (an experiment that
went well), hellebores of all types, deutzia, Allegheny spurge, all
manner of hosta and fern, Japanese iris in the pond, and for the fall
(surprisingly) gentian. The tiarella bloom multiple times over the season
and the trillium flowers last for weeks. Jack-in-the-pulpit grows wild
everywhere here, as does Virginia creeper. I generally have tuberous
begonias in pots and New Guinea impatiens in the ground. Mountain laurel,
azalea, and rhododendron are prominent background shrubs. My Pieris
Japonica (mountain fire, I think) holds its flowers for months and blooms
twice.

I know we were talking annuals here, but they've never been 'the right
plant in the right place' on our property.

Have a great weekend,
Lois
