Re: Impatiens Downy Mildew, read it & weep

At the Smithsonian In-Service Training talk today on plant diseases,
Impatiens Downy Mildew was described in details. It stays in the soil for up to
5 years. Worse is that Jewelweed is a vector plant and that is found up and
down the East Coast :-(.

Basically, pull, bag, and dispose of any diseased plants at first sign. Do
NOT re-use their pots or soil. He recommended a few chemicals for
applications, but none seemed effective or worth the bother.

They are urging everyone (including commercial wholesale operations) NOT
to grow it for at least a year. Unrealistic, IMHO.

Sincerely,
Kathy Jentz
