[GWL]: new topic?
At the risk of sounding like a grammar scold, I'm going to toss out a
thought for your consideration. Since this is a writing group, it seem
to me that we could help each other by pointing out writing errors that
we've seen in print from time to time. After all, we're professionals
and it doesn't help our image if we make bloopers in front of our
readers.
For example? It seems to me that a lot of folks these days are confused
about "it's" and "its." Also, I am currently working on a story about an
award-winning landscape project done by a major Chicagoland firm, and I
see that the materials that the company submitted in their official
entry are full of the word "compliment" where the writer needed to say "
complement." TV reporters are increasingly making errors with "there
is" and "there are" these days. Even the mighty New York Times in its
Science section mixed up "site" and "sight" a few months ago. (I was
shocked, shocked...).
We don't need to get personal and name name. A vague "I saw
somewhere...." will do. Of course, this is different from the typos that
we all make when we're half brain dead at the end of the day.
Where is E.B.White, now that we need him? Carolyn Ulrich
