Of a certainty. But that's because English is a lot of things, but
phonetic ain't one of them. And American is even worse. 

Perhaps the ultimate: Pronounce ghoti. If you got anything beside "fish"
you're wrong.

And while where on the strangeness of the English language: We all know
that two negatives make a positive, right? But how many of you know the
one phrase in the English language in which two positives make a
negative.

And during the 18th and most of the 19th centuries most people were
anything than dull. They would spell the same word half a dozen ways,
even in the same document. Makes reading some of those old journals and
letters rather interesting.
