[GWL]: spelling


Apparently it was good old Noah Webster who initiated the differences in 
American and British spelling.  He thought that American spelling should 
reflect the direct, no-nonsence character of the American people, and he 
wanted to set the country apart from Britain.  So in his dictionary he 
deleted all the flourishes such as the extra "u's" that appear in many
