Re: [GWL]: Vine for north wall
Carol,
Again, Sorry Lon!
One way to grow a vine "on" a wall, north or any other, is to construct a
sturdy trellis four inches from the wall, attach the trellis to the wall, and
grow the vine on the trellis, not on the wall itself. You'll have the
appearance of a wall-grown vine, but not the problem of vine roots (such as
those of English ivy) penetrating the mortar of bricks, or the foliage of any
vine causing rot to the wood beneath it from trapped moisture. If you build
the trellis correctly, you can even detach it from the wall (with help) and
lay it on the ground when it comes time to paint the wood wall beneath. I've
seen plans someplace over the past 10 years or so for a structure of this
type, and they areally are ingenious solutions.
